Wolf Administration Announces Federal Funds Investment for North Extension of Bedford Heritage Trail

Bedford, PA – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation(PennDOT) Secretary Leslie S. Richards joined Congressman Bill Shuster, former Congressman Bud Shuster, and other local officials today in announcing a department investment of federal funding for the North Extension of the Bedford Heritage Trail in Bedford County.

“The Bedford Heritage Trail is an excellent example of what great things can be accomplished when officials, municipalities, agencies, and citizens work together toward a common goal,” Richards said. “This beautiful trail will be available for citizens and visitors of Bedford County to enjoy for generations.”

The investment announced today will allow for the construction of the North Extension of the Bedford Heritage Trail from Fort Bedford Park in downtown Bedford Borough to Old Bedford Village and Friendship Village. This will allow visitors of downtown Bedford to walk or bike to these two widely visited tourist attractions. The trail will utilize easements on private and public land parallel to the existing limited access Route 220.

Currently, the approximately 2.65-mile Bedford Heritage Trail connects the Omni Bedford Springs Resort with downtown Bedford and Fort Bedford Park. The Bedford Heritage Trail Project has been sponsored by the Bedford Joint Municipal Authority whose overall goal has been to stimulate economic growth in downtown Bedford, increase recreational opportunities for residents of Bedford County, provide educational opportunities, and provide sustainable forms of travel to downtown Bedford.

The Bedford Heritage Trail North Extension Project is made possible via $2.5 million of federal funding and will be programmed on the 2019 Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP).
